Pride at the Faculty of Law

Local chapter of OutLAW provides safe spaces and advocacy for LGBTQ+

2 March 2015

The Faculty of Law is proud to support our chapter of OutLAW during Pride Week, March 2 to 6. OutLAW represents sexual and gender minorities including, but not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer to promote awareness and advocate in issues affecting students. OutLAW is more than promoting safe spaces on campus, they're advancing LGBTQ+ rights in the broader community.

OutLAW president Andrew Lawrence is proud of the advocacy of the group, but knows issues remain. "I think that a lot of people thought that once there was gay marriage, the fight was over." Lawrence says the fact that we're still discussing gay straight alliances and trans rights demonstrate the fight is still going on.

Pride Week is an opportunity for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters to get loud about both their successes, and the battles on the horizon. Lawrence himself finds "the faculty of Law to be incredibly open" and willing to assist OutLAW in it's activities. But where the average student may just be mentally high-fiving the group in its advocacy success, Lawrence welcomes all comers to assist the group in support, fund raising, and organizing speakers to create greater knowledge on LGBTQ+ legal issues.

In honour of the Pride Parade on Tuesday, March 3, students, staff and members of faculty are invited to wear their rainbow best. To learn more about OutLAW and how to support the group, you can visit OutLAW's website or head to Facebook to join the conversation.
