University of Alberta Safe Disclosure and Human Rights Advisor

Topic: Civility and Respect in the Workplace or Learning Environment.

In conjunction with Orientation Week, University of Alberta Safe Disclosure & Human Rights Advisor Wade King gave a presentation to first year law students on "Civility and Respect in the Workplace or Learning Environment" during the lunch hour in McLennan Ross Hall.

During the presentation, Mr. King talked about how feeling valued, respected and included is all part of the experience that is encouraged at the University of Alberta. He also talked about how courtesy and civility are essential values in the legal profession and are among the obligations formally recognized in the Code of Conduct governing lawyers.

During the session Mr. King helped individuals to cultivate a respectful and inclusive vocabulary, while raising awareness about how thoughtful interaction with others can be beneficial to work, study, and living environments. Finally, he talked about bullying behavior, how to respond, resources available, and strategies to assist those who have been the subject of bullying.

Wade King is the Safe Disclosure & Human Rights Advisor to the University of Alberta. He is a past President of the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education (CAPDHHE), is an Advisory Board member of the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion and is a member of the Edmonton Business Diversity Network. Mr. King has over 13 years of experience in the public and post-secondary sectors, primarily in the areas of human rights, diversity & inclusion, community relations and safe disclosure.
