Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS) hosts first speaker panel of 2016

8 January 2016

On Wednesday, January 6th, the University of Alberta Faculty of Law Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS) held their first speaker panel of 2016. Faculty, staff, and students gathered in McLennan Ross Hall to hear Edmonton Oilers' Assistant General Manager Bill Scott and Edmonton Oilers' General Counsel Keely Brown.

During the course of the two hour event, topics of discussion included what it's like to work inside an NHL franchise and the unique challenges of working as a general counsel and assistant general manager. There was a great representation of law students, who engaged with both speakers through questions, both in person and via social media.

Ms Brown explained her role on the business side of a professional sports team and how this influences her duties and obligations as in-house counsel. Her background as a top ringette and hockey goalie assists her with her approachability with the entry level employees and her respect with senior management. She stressed there are opportunities in the sports industry but one has to be willing to work their way up.

Mr. Scott worked his way through the ECHL, AHL, and up to Assistant General Manager of a Canadian NHL franchise. He spoke about the amicable dealings between most agents and teams, with, of course, some exceptions. International tournaments impact player development but ultimately who goes is determined by what is in the best interest of the player.

Both emphasized the importance of genuine relationships in the legal, business, and sports communities. They also spoke about knowing oneself when approaching negotiations and the work world.

SELS is a student group that hosts various speakers and events to promote and inform students of opportunities in the sports and entertainment law industry.
