In Memoriam - William H. Hurlburt, Q.C. (LLB '49, LLD (Hon.)'97)

Former president of the Law Society of Alberta made significant contributions to law reform in the province.

The University of Alberta Faculty of Law joins the Alberta Law Reform Institute (ALRI) in mourning the passing of William (Bill) H. Hurlburt, Q.C. and extending our sympathies to his family. Mr. Hurlburt (LLB '49, LLD (Hon.)'97) was a thought leader in independent law reform for decades and an ALRI board member from 1968 to 2015. He also served as ALRI's chair (1971-73) and director (1975-86). Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Hurlburt - the author of Law Reform Commissions in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada - contributed to many legal organizations, serving as president of the Law Society of Alberta (1975), president of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (1978), and on the Canadian Bar Association Council (1974-1986).
