University of Alberta Faculty of Law Moot Team Brings Home the Bennett Jones Cup in Health Law Advocacy

2L students victorious in first win for UAlberta in the six-year history of the competition.

Law Communications - 14 March 2016

Congratulations to 2L students Deirdre Fleming, Sarah Harvey, Conor Holash, and Tyler McDonough for winning the Bennett Jones Cup in Health Law Advocacy at a mooting competition in Calgary on March 12. Additional congratulations go to Conor Holash for earning the top oralist prize for the UAlberta team. The team was ably coached by Professor Ubaka Ogbogu.

This "battle of Alberta" saw moot teams from the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta argue a complex case involving an appeal and cross-appeal of an Ontario Court of Appeal decision on the issue of whether a duty of care is owed to future children for injuries caused by a physician's negligence prior to conception. This was the first win for UAlberta in the six-year history of the competition.

Thank you to Bennett Jones LLP for sponsoring and hosting the event, especially Valerie Prather at Bennett Jones in Calgary for her efforts establishing and maintaining this annual event. The team would also like to thank the following individuals for serving as judges for the practice rounds that comprised preparation for the competition: Maeghan Toews (Health Law Institute), Jennifer Davis (McLennan Ross), Mathieu LaFleche (Bennett Jones), Michael Sestito (Bennett Jones), Renee Gagnon (Bennett Jones), and Matthew Riskin (Bennett Jones). Thanks also to Professor Ogbogu for his stellar coaching, Professor Erin Nelson for providing additional guidance, and to Aileen Reilly and Nicki Baron for their planning and logistics support.

The Bennett Jones Cup will be displayed in the Dean's Suite. Congratulations again to Deirdre, Sarah, Conor, and Tyler for their groundbreaking achievement.
