University of Alberta Faculty of Law Davies Moot Team Places Third in Toronto

Team's success a tribute to skill, hard work, and a little help from professors Lavoie and Henderson; sponsors Stikeman Elliott LLP.

Law Communications - 9 March 2016

Congratulations are in order for University of Alberta Faculty of Law 2L students Matthew Dolan, Alexandra Dunn, Ashton Menuz, and Daniel Van den Berg, who placed third in the March 4-5 Davies Corporate Securities Moot in Toronto. The team won the prize for third place overall in the competition, only narrowly missing the final.

"Having witnessed each round of our team's competition, I was not at all surprised to see the team place so highly," said Malcolm Lavoie, Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Alberta Faculty of Law. "The students' skill and hard work put them within striking distance of winning the competition outright. It is particularly impressive given the team was composed entirely of second-year students."

The moot team was sponsored by Stikeman Elliott LLP and benefited tremendously from the expertise of the members of the Alberta legal community who generously volunteered their time to judge practice rounds.

Thank you to the Hon. Justice Frans Slatter, Sharif Farrag, Andrew Foster, Eric Spink, Adam Ollenberger, Taher Ladha, James Park, Damien Kutinsky, Sherry Smith, Professors Anna Lund, Shannon O'Byrne, Rod Wood, and Moin Yahya, as well as the lawyers from the Alberta Investment Management Corporation and Stikeman Elliott LLP who hosted practice rounds for the students.

The Davies moot team was ably coached by Professor Malcolm Lavoie, who built on the solid foundation for success developed over the past several years by Professor Gail Henderson.

"Despite having handed over the coaching reins, Professor Henderson provided invaluable assistance and feedback to the students at each stage of their moot preparation," said Professor Lavoie. "The team benefited greatly from the unparalleled institutional knowledge and connections that she built up over her years as coach."

Congratulations Matt, Alex, Ashton, and Daniel! You do us proud.
