The Faculty of Law mourns the passing of Garth Fryett, Q.C. (1927-2016). Fryett, an eminent lawyer within the Edmonton bar, was a lifelong supporter of the community that fostered his legal career.

Born in Saskatchewan, as the son of an RCMP member, Fryett grew up in a number of towns in western Canada. After graduating from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1952, Fryett joined the firm of Brownlee & Brownlee. He was admitted to the partnership in 1956, at which point the firm was renamed Brownlee, Brownlee & Fryett. Fryett remained at the firm for the length of his legal career.

Fryett served the legal community in a variety of leadership roles, including as director of the Legal Archives of Alberta (1996-2011) and as a long time member and secretary of The Legal Forum. He was also a member of the executive of the Edmonton Bar Association (EBA) and president in 1969-70. His legal honours include the EBA Distinguished Service Award (1996) and the Law Society of Alberta's 60 year Practice Award (2013).

The academic community also benefited from his exceptional talent. Fryett served as a member of the University of Alberta Senate (1973-75, 1991-94). He was also a member of the Board of Governors (1975-81) and president of the Alumni Association (1974-5).
