The University of Alberta Faculty of Law would like to congratulate Chief Wilton (Willie) Littlechild, who will be presented with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Lethbridge on June 3, 2016. Chief Littlechild, who is one of three Commissioners on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, also holds an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Alberta ('07).

"Wilton Littlechild - lawyer, politician, human rights advocate, athlete - is one of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law's most prominent alumni and the first Alberta Treaty First Nations person to earn a law degree from the University of Alberta," said Dean Paul Paton. "Chief Littlechild is a tremendous ambassador for the legal profession and a role model for current students, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. The honorary Doctor of Laws bestowed upon Chief Littlechild by the University of Lethbridge is a fitting tribute to his many contributions to the Cree Nation, to Canadian society, and to the rights of Indigenous peoples worldwide. We congratulate him on this most recent honour."

Chief Littlechild operates the law firm of J. Wilton Littlechild, Barrister and Solicitor, on the Ermineskin Reserve. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1988 - 1993 for the riding of Wetaskiwin-Rimbey and was a parliamentary delegate to the United Nations.
