The University of Alberta Faculty of Law would like to thank Moodys Gartner Tax Law for their generous gift of $100,000 to support the Bowman National Tax Moot team and student research assistantships to aid faculty research in the area of taxation law.
On Wednesday, May 12, faculty, staff, and our 2015-2016 Bowman team joined our honoured guests from Moodys Gartner in CN Alumni Hall for a reception to thank the firm for their support of the Faculty and to celebrate this new partnership. We were pleased to welcome the firm's managing director, Dale Franko, as well as directors Roy Berg, Kim Moody, and Faculty of Law alumnus Greg Gartner, Q.C. Moodys Gartner provides a variety of tax services to clients in Canada and the United States, including corporate tax planning, estate and trust planning, international tax planning, tax dispute resolution, and US tax compliance.
The reception, hosted by Dean Paul Paton, provided an opportunity to promote the importance of mooting as an opportunity for students to develop lawyering skills such as research, advocacy, writing, communication, negotiation, and consensus building. The strength of our moot program depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of our students, the commitment of our coaches, and the financial support - and often hands-on mentorship - provided by our generous sponsors; sponsors like Moodys Gartner. We also thank the firm for their support of our student research assistantship program. Research assistantships advance both faculty scholarship and provide our students with valuable research experience and a source of income.
