The University of Alberta Faculty of Law would like to congratulate Douglas R. Stollery, Q.C. (LLB '76) on his election as the university's 21st chancellor. Stollery's four-year term begins on June 15, 2016 when he succeeds current chancellor Ralph Young.

"Doug Stollery is one of the Faculty of Law's most esteemed graduates, someone whose impact on the University of Alberta and Faculty of Law communities with his accomplishments and service is both deep and wide," said Dean Paul Paton. "On a personal note, Doug was one of the first to reach out with a welcome when I arrived in Edmonton in July 2014 and I've been fortunate to have his advice and support as a member of my newly constituted External Advisory Board."

Stollery - who earned his LLB at the University of Alberta in 1976 - has strong ties to the Faculty of Law. He has taught as a sessional instructor, currently serves on the Dean's External Advisory Board, and sponsors the Faculty's Wilson Moot team, which honours the legacy of Madam Justice Bertha Wilson through an annual national constitutional law advocacy competition for law students. Stollery has also served as a director of the Alberta Law Reform Institute.

His distinguished legal career includes seven years as general counsel to PCL Constructors Inc., member of the board of directors of PCL Construction Holdings Ltd., and corporate secretary to the PCL family of companies (2006-2013). From 1982 to 2006 he was a partner with Reynolds Mirth Richards & Farmer LLP, where he focused on construction law, real estate law, corporate and commercial law, and constitutional law.

Stollery is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Canadian General Counsel Lifetime Achievement Award, the University of Alberta Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is currently president of the Stollery Charitable Foundation.

"Chancellor-elect Stollery's contributions to the legal profession, to philanthropy, his championing of human rights and advocacy for LGBTI+ persons, and his commitment to building healthy communities make him an ideal Chancellor," said Dean Paton. "We wish him and his partner Scott a very successful tenure and offer our enthusiastic support."
