Professor Tamara Buckwold and Sessional Instructor Doug Peterson Recognized at Faculty of Law Teaching Awards Reception

Annual reception to honour recipients of the Hon. Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award and the Pringle/Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award.

On Tuesday, September 27, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate Professor Tamara Buckwold and sessional instructor Doug Peterson, recipients of the 2016 Hon. Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award and the 2016 Pringle/Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award respectively. Family, friends, and colleagues of Prof. Buckwold and Mr. Peterson were in attendance at the reception. Although Mr. Peterson was unable to attend the ceremony, his father, Mr. Ron Peterson, accepted the award on his behalf.

Prof. Buckwold joined the Faculty of Law in 2005 and teaches and publishes in the areas of commercial law and contracts. Mr. Peterson has been teaching at the University of Alberta for 16 years, in both the Faculty of Law and the Alberta School of Business. His teaching interests include international business law, international business transactions, law of business organizations, legal foundations of the Canadian economy, and Pacific Rim law.

Teaching Awards

The Hon. Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award - named in honour of the late Mr. Justice Miller, who served as Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta (1984-1993) and Chancellor of the University of Alberta (1986-1990) - recognizes excellence in teaching by a full-time member of the Faculty. It was established in 1998 by the Faculty and the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association. Recent recipients of the award include Mitchell McInnes (2015), Bruce Ziff (2014), and Annalise Acorn (2013).

The Pringle / Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award was established by the Faculty in 2005 to recognize excellence in teaching by a sessional lecturer. In 2013, the award was named in honour of two long-serving instructors, the late Alex Pringle, Q.C., and Peter Royal, Q.C., both of whom were previous winners of the award. Recent recipients of the award include Karen Hewitt, Q.C. (2015), Naomi Schmold (2014), and Marie Gordon, Q.C. (2013).
