March 18 competition saw UAlberta and UCalgary teams debate a recent hot topic in health law.

Law Communications - 23 March 2017

On March 18, UAlberta Law students Natasha Birchall, Carina Chiu, Jenny Khakh, and Danielle Mousseau participated in the Bennett Jones Health Law Moot Cup.

In this competition, two teams from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary argue a recent hot topic in health law.

The UAlberta Law team was coached by Assistant Professor Ubaka Ogbogu. Ogbogu reports that while our team's preparations and presentations were top-notch, the U of C managed to successfully reclaim the Health Law Moot Cup. (UAlberta Law won the competition last year.)

The team had the following to say:

"Collectively, our team feels that this has been one of the most valuable experiences of our law school careers thus far, and we would like to thank Dean Paton for his continued support of the moot program. We would also like to thank our guest judges for taking the time to help us with our oral arguments and for all of the excellent feedback. Lastly, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Professor Ogbogu - his enthusiasm, invaluable mentorship, and infectious smile made the moot experience a delight. We could not have asked for a better coach and mentor and cannot thank him enough for all of his hard work in making this moot a success."

UAlberta Law is grateful to Bennett Jones for their continued sponsorship of the moot and support of legal education in Alberta. Special thanks go to Valerie Prather, Q.C. for organizing the event, and the Honourable Mr. Justice John S. Little of the Court of Queen's Bench and Tony Friend, Q.C. for serving as judges for the moot.

The team would also like to extend their sincere thanks to the practice round judges: Michael Sestito, Sarah Huot, Renee Ganon, and Mathieu LaFleche from Bennett Jones' Edmonton office, and Assistant Professor Anna Lund. Lastly, the team would like to thank all those involved in the mooting program, including Dean Paton, the Brimacombe judges, and the administrative staff.

Congratulations Jenny, Carina, Danielle, and Natasha for representing UAlberta Law with great skill, determination, and class!
