UAlberta Law students bring home four awards following Davies Corporate/Securities Moot

Impressive team of mooters place fourth overall.

Law Communications - 21 March 2017

Congratulations to UAlberta Law's Sunny Mann, Kaelyn MacGillivray, Matthew Summers, and Randall Trombley who placed fourth overall at the Davies Corporate/Securities Moot that was held in Toronto March 10-11.

The team also earned second place for their factum and had two oralists rank in the top 12 - Trombley (8) and MacGillivray (12).

Both UAlberta Law teams competed against the eventual finalists of the competition - the University of Toronto and Western University.

Coach John Lemieux of Dentons said that Summers and Mann held their own against one of the most active and engaged benches he had ever seen.

He had these words to share about the team:

"I cannot say enough good things. Each of them worked diligently, advocated vigorously, and kept their respective good humours throughout. It was my pleasure to be their coach, and the experience ranks as a highlight of my career. For me, the [second place factum] award was not the highlight, rather it was the U of A's four participants so honourably and capably advocating that left me with a big smile on my face."

Speaking on behalf of his teammates, Summers shared these words of thanks:

"John, in his rookie season as coach, took a rag-tag team of mooters into the big city and did what no one thought was possible. Like Jack Adams and Gene Hackman before him, John has attained the very pinnacle of moot coaching greatness."

Great results would not have been possible without members of the local bar and bench volunteering to act as practice round judges, challenging each of the team members with thoughtful questions and providing each with invaluable insights.

UAlberta Law and the moot team would like to thank: Mr. Justice Frans Slatter (Court of Appeal); Mr. Justice Kevin Feehan and Mr. Justice Stephen Hillier (Court of Queen's Bench); Sarah Maharaj; Wendy-Anne Berkenbosch; Eric Spink, QC; Peter Amrhein; Mark Smith; Colleen Cebuliak; Ian Wachowicz; Chris Zelyas; Mandy England; Drew Broughton; and Professor Rod Wood.

We would also like to thank Stikeman Elliott LLP, which generously sponsors our Corporate/Securities team. We were fortunate to send our teams down to Calgary for a practice round and would like to thank Michael Mestinsek, Geoffrey Holub, Gloria Moore, Amanda Kousinioris, and Nicole Lecours for offering to help our students with their preparations, and for hosting them at Stikeman's Calgary office.
