New faces at the Faculty

Priscilla Popp - 4 August 2022

We were very happy to have some new faces join us over the past year as we filled roles that are essential to the Faculty’s overall success and longevity. The people you’re about to meet — who most of the time work behind the scenes — are key to ensuring the Law Centre doors stay open, students are supported and our community stays at the heart of everything we do.

ELLEN DOTY Assistant Dean, Advancement

An accomplished musician and recent recipient of a 2022 Apex Award, Doty joined us from her previous position as interim associate director, development, at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Doty is currently working on her master’s degree in Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Carleton University.

Her day-to-day work with the Faculty includes meeting with alumni and donors, and acting as the driving force behind Faculty donor and stewardship initiatives — including the first-ever university-wide Giving Day, which was May 11!

“Since joining the Faculty of Law in February, it's been full steam ahead. I've really enjoyed getting to know faculty members, staff, students, alumni and donors. I will be working closely with Dean Billingsley over the coming months to develop the Faculty's philanthropic priorities in alignment with her vision for the future of our program. If you're interested in giving back to the Faculty of Law, whether that be through supporting students, research, or broader community projects, don't hesitate to reach out to me at any time,” she said.

GREG MALCHUK Student Wellness and NCA Coordinator

As someone who has studied psychology and teaching, supporting students and lending a listening ear comes naturally for Malchuk. A key resource for students who are facing tough times and as the staff member who oversees the Faculty’s Internationally Trained Lawyer Pathway, each day brings a different opportunity to showcase his strength in connecting with people.

During the first few months of his time with the Faculty, he organized a wellness event designed to beat January’s Blue Monday and also arranged a free creative writing session for students wishing to delve into their artistic side.

“I thoroughly enjoy assisting students in any way that I can. As someone with a background in teaching and psychology, helping students has always been a key aspect of work. By nature, law school is very tough and at times can be very stressful. I’m happy to serve as one of the various resources that are available to students throughout their law school experience,” he said.

CALLIE SCHNEIDER Student Recruiter/Financial Advisor

Schneider joined us as an already-valued member of the University of Alberta community. She was welcomed to the Faculty following her work for National Recruitment in the Office of the Registrar, and she is also a Faculty of Science alumna.

In her role as student recruiter and financial advisor, she speaks about the Faculty to prospective students, answers questions about law school, and manages and assists with organizing the LSAT Summer Prep Program and student exchanges. She also had the opportunity to work with current students on the Dean’s Welcome in March.

When she’s not busy conversing with students, you might find her cooking, listening to podcasts or taking a walk in the river valley.

“I'm enjoying my role in the Faculty of Law a lot! I come from a recruitment background, but the scope of this job and the work I'm able to do with not only incoming students but with current students as well is really exciting. I'm looking forward to building relationships with incoming students and then working with them as they complete their degree to become successful lawyers,” she said.
