Student Adviser One-On-One Sessions

Student affairs offices in health-care faculties were initiated to advocate for and advise learners who might be having difficulties. In 2002 a mandatory one-on-one meeting with a student adviser was initiated on a trial basis for all first-year students in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. The intent was to identify learners who might need help, and problems that they might encounter but not bring forth.

Feedback from learners was positive, and they recommended that the mandatory sessions continue for incoming students.

Each first-year student is required to meet with an adviser twice during the year, once each term, for approximately 15-20 minutes.
