Melissa Ristau

I originally trained as a registered nurse in the U.S.A. I have worked in various healthcare settings and roles but the majority of my 16 years of experience has been working with older adults. I am very passionate about the care of individuals with dementia who live in long-term care. My doctoral research focuses on finding sustainable ways to assess and improve moments within dementia care in order to improve daily quality of life for individuals in these care settings.

I am a doctoral student in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. My doctoral research explores factors that influence older adults’ emotional support. Some of my interests include reading novels, travelling new places, and trying new cuisines. One of my dreams is to visit seven wonders of the world.

Shovana Shrestha

Shovana is a doctoral student in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. She has around six years of experience working as a nurse educator, coordinator, and clinical supervisor for the undergraduate nursing program, back in Nepal. Her zeal to improve nursing education, practice, and research, especially in the field of gerontology, motivated her to pursue doctoral study. Shovana is deeply concerned about the state of pain management practices in nursing home settings and is determined to improve it through her research. Her doctoral research is centered around factors that maximize quality of life for nursing home residents who live with pain.

My name is Bita. I am an international student in the Nursing Leadership master's program. I was working as a charge nurse in an emergency department for about 4 years in my home country before starting my education in Canada. There is a significant prevalence of moral distress among nurses and healthcare professionals affecting their professional and personal lives, patients' care quality, and healthcare systems. My project focus is on evaluating existing interventions in minimizing moral distress among nurses in healthcare systems. I am honored that Dr. Hoben is my supervisor in the project.
