We encourage you to apply for the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program. Applicants must:
- Identify as a Black youth
- In Grade 10 or 11 (Applicants in University are not eligible to be in the program)
- Able to attend all days of the mentorship program, for 6 weeks, full time in the summer
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee claimant
- Have parents’ consent to participate in the mentorship program

We Are Seeking Mentors for the Black Youth Mentorship Program
The Black Youth Mentorship Program is an interdisciplinary program aimed at preparing Black youths to succeed both in university and in the world of work. Students in all disciplines are welcome to join the program. Students in the mentorship program will gain professional practice or research experience with a Black professional or Faculty member, attend workshops, and engage in group activities. Between July 4 to August 12, 2022, students will attend the mentorship program full time. Students will spend 4 days a week engaged in individual mentorship with a professional and gain practical experience.
The primary objectives of the Program are to:
- Increase leadership skills of Black youth
- Increase post-secondary entry and completion rate for Black youth
- Foster community belonging for Black youth
- Create a positive cultural identity for Black youth
- Increase the ability of Black youth to tackle issues of racism and discrimination
Who is a Mentor?
A mentor is someone experienced in a particular field(s) who commits time to assist with the academic, professional, and social development of others. As a mentor with the BYMLP, you will gain the opportunity to share your professional knowledge, skills, and guidance with Black students in grades 10 and 11. As a trusted advisor, you will help students to know what kind of preparation they need to make in order to reach their career goals and motivate them to work hard in school so that they can achieve success like you. Black students need role models who they feel understand them and the challenges they face to inspire them and teach them how to
successfully navigate the world of school and work. You could be that person!
What Does a Mentor Do?
- Build rapport at each meeting with mentee(s)
- Provide truthful and encouraging feedback
- Show genuine interest in mentees wellbeing and success
- Provide guidance/tips that can help mentees to achieve their goals
- Motivate mentees to rise to challenges
- Foster conversations with mentees that will broaden their perspectives
Who is eligible to be a Mentor?
Mentors of the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program must meet the following
requirement:
- Have Bachelors degree or higher
- Work in an occupation that requires a Bachelors degree or higher
- Be willing to complete a police check (vulnerable sector police check). Cost of police
check will be paid by the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program. - Available to mentor Black youths
Expectations of Mentors:
- Commit to positive interactions with youth
- Meet with mentee(s) for at least 1 hour a week, or
- Assign a project for the mentee(s) to work on and supervise them.
- Commit to mentoring and the eagerness to make it a priority
- Commit to confidentiality
- Complete an evaluation form for the BYMLP
