Recruitment & Entrance Scholarships

The purpose of these scholarships are to recruit superior and outstanding students into our graduate program.

University of Alberta Graduate Recruitment Scholarship

Value: $5,000 (nomination by the Department). Learn more

University of Alberta Entrance Scholarship

Value: $17,500 for MSc. $21,000 for PhD

Domestic students will receive an additional $5,800, international students will receive an additional $10,000 to help cover fees (nomination by the Department). Learn more

Alberta Cancer Foundation/Antoine Noujaim Entrance Award
Value: $25,000 for one year. Given to outstanding international and domestic graduate students beginning their program in Oncology (nominated by the department & administered in August).
Cathy and Harold Roozen Entrance Scholarship
Value: $22,000/year for two years, plus a $1,500 research allowance and tuition award. Awarded on the basis of academic merit, this award recognizes the top international or Canadian graduate student beginning a new program in Oncology (nominated by the department & administered in August).

Scholarships for Continuing Grad Students

Students currently enrolled in the Oncology Graduate Program may be eligible for studentship awards from a variety of sources, including external agencies:

Yau Family Foundation (YFF) Studentship

Value: $20,000 divided ($13,000 towards the student stipend and $7,000 to the supervisor for operating costs associated with the student project). Awarded to ongoing students based on good academic standing and financial need of the supervisor. Maximum of one award per lab at any given time (nominated by the department & administered in August).

Dr. Herbert Meltzer Memorial Fellowship
Value: tuition fees for one academic year. Awarded to students enrolled in the Cancer Sciences PhD program who have passed their Candidacy Exams. Eligibility is based on academic excellence and scientific merit through student presentations (nominated by the department & administered in August).
Oncology Graduate Achievement Award
Value: $1,000. Intended to reward students for excellence in scientific authorship. The publications must be first-authored by the student and will be ranked according to the most current impact factor of the journal in which they are accepted. Two awards are available annually in June/July.

 


Department Travel Awards

 

B & G Heidecker Travel Award Endowment

Value: up to $500. Awarded to assist graduate students in the Department of Oncology to travel to, and be active participants in, symposia and conferences related to their field of cancer research. Students must be presenting at the event for which funding is requested. Four awards are available for conferences that will take place until December 31, 2022. Thereafter two awards are typically available per year.
