'Forging ahead': Agriculture innovator recognized for clean tech focus

Founder of Forge Hydrocarbons named to Canada's Clean 50

Bioresource scientist David Bressler has been recognized as one of Canada's preeminent leaders in clean technology with his induction to Canada's Clean 50 for 2017.

Bressler, the executive director of the Biorefining Conversions Network in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, is the technology founder behind Forge Hydrocarbons, an emerging leader in bio-fuel energy-alternative deployment. Its success is due to Bressler's patented conversion process which starts with "ugly" feedstock such as animal fat, beef tallow, crop seed oil and even restaurant grease, and converts it to pure gas or diesel fuel. "There's no impurity in the end product," said Bressler, "no metals, sulfur or hydrogen."

Being named to the Clean 50 is unexpected recognition, said Bressler. "I feel humbled to be included amongst leaders in Canadian research, civil service, community leadership, and the business and finance community," he said.

"I am pleased that our work is contributing to the Clean 50's legacy of society leaders working together to further develop sustainable solutions for our country that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable."

"David's work is a standout example of the way our world-class faculty are developing their ideas in a way that are good for people, contribute to economic diversification and benefit global sustainability," says Stan Blade, dean of ALES.

"Research on leading innovations like clean, alternative fuels are what makes our researchers stand out and I applaud this well-deserved recognition."

Bressler was chosen after rigorous screening and research by Delta Management Group, with advice from internal researchers and external advisors. Delta Management manages the award selection process for the program, which recognizes those who are contributing to "clean capitalism" in Canada.

The honourees were selected from an initial pool of over 500 well-qualified nominees, said Gavin Pitchford, CEO of Delta Management Group. "The individuals we chose for the Clean 50 this year are true leaders, and should be an inspiration for all Canadians."
