Curriculum

Clinical Training

The University of Alberta GI Residency Training Program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada which dictates the Objectives of Training and the Subspecialty Training Requirements [link to website]. A rotation schedule is created by the program director each year and is designed to help each individual resident meet the educational requirements of the University of Alberta GI Training Program. Each academic year is divided into 4-week blocks. The majority of rotations are 4 weeks in duration. Residents will also be assigned to half-day longitudinal clinics (residents will be excused from their regular rotation activities to attend these clinics).

Residents are expected to become competent in diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy during their GI residency (this does not include ERCP or advanced therapeutics). All procedures are performed under the direct observation of an attending physician. Residents are expected to keep an up to date list of procedures for review by the Program Director or Residency Program Committee.

Clinical Rotations

Detailed information about mandatory and elective rotations is found in the GI Residency Training Manual.
