Copyright Office - 08 September 2017

The Copyright Office has developed and is currently distributing two new information posters to be posted alongside university-operated copiers, printers and scanners.

One of the posters is focused on copying that is done on behalf of the university, usually by faculty and staff. This is the copying that is governed by the Use of Copyright Materials Policy and Procedure in UAPPOL. This poster includes the "fair dealing guidelines" that can be applied to such copying. A copy of this poster is available here. This poster should accompany copying equipment that is generally accessible only to faculty and staff.

The other poster is focused on private or individual copying using equipment provided by the university. This poster makes it clear that individuals are responsible for complying with copyright law in their use of university equipment. A copy of this poster is available here. This poster should accompany publicly accessible copying equipment.

Copyright issues should be considered before copying a substantial amount of any work protected by copyright. Deciding whether an amount is substantial is both a qualitative and quantitative determination. More information regarding making determinations of substantiality is available here.

Further information about copyright is available elsewhere on the Copyright Office website. Specific questions can be directed to the Copyright Office help desk at copyright@ualberta.ca.
