Upfront Fixed Tuition Rate for Incoming International Students

24 June 2019

The University has moved to a program-fee based structure for incoming international students that will provide an upfront fixed tuition rate for the lengths of their program in response to sustained student advocacy and a government directive that international students should have predictability concerning their tuition. This new structure will only affect students arriving in 2020 and later.

As this new model was being developed, it was first presented as offering a four-year, guaranteed fixed tuition rate for Masters students and a five-year, guaranteed fixed tuition rate for PhD students.

The GSA, mindful that many doctoral students take more than five years to complete their programs, raised this issue in the various University governance committees where this proposal was discussed and advocated that the five-year term should be extended. In response to this advocacy, senior University administration ran the numbers and found that, indeed, a significant number of PhD students took over five years to complete their program, and raised the guarantee to six years.

As a result of the GSA's advocacy, the new proposed tuition model will thus now provide for a four-year, guaranteed fixed tuition rate for Masters students and a six-year, guaranteed fixed tuition rate for PhD students.
