Voices for Peace: Statement on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

24 November 2023

Our hearts extend to those who have lost their lives, their kids, the captives enduring hardship, and the families whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the Palestinian-Israeli war. We unequivocally condemn all forms of hatred, including anti-Palestinian and anti-Israeli sentiments, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. Recognizing the profound impact of this conflict on our community, we share a collective concern to see the bloodshed going on.

As students and members of the university community witness the harrowing scenes of war daily, they are deeply moved and feel compelled to express support for their chosen causes, whether through organizing events, participating in peaceful protests, or engaging in other constructive actions. We emphasize the importance of upholding the academic community's freedom of speech and insist that the university maintain an impartial stance towards all students from diverse backgrounds.

We urge the university to collaborate with student leaders before issuing statements on student events, ensuring that the language is inclusive and sensitive to the feelings of all groups. In times like these, consultation with diverse voices is essential for fostering understanding and unity.

For any of our members adversely affected by these events, we provide links to various resources available through the university and the Graduate Student Association (GSA).

Graduate students engaged in teaching activities, including teaching assistance or instruction, can access these resources to support their teaching with a trauma-informed approach. Additionally, for those seeking support or guidance, please don't hesitate to contact our front desk for assistance or to request a meeting with any of the elected student executives at the GSA. Your well-being and academic success are our priorities, and we are here to offer the necessary support during these challenging times.
