UAlberta Law's 2017 Convocation caps off an incredibly successful year for Calgary-born Ashton Menuz, who is the recipient of the Horace Harvey Medal in Law and the Mr WG Justice Morrow Memorial Prize.
The Horace Harvey Medal medal is awarded to a graduating student with the highest standing in the work prescribed for the JD degree. This award automatically granted her the Mr WG Justice Morrow Memorial Prize.
"The support that I received from the Faculty was a huge contributor to my success. I can't thank the professors and staff at the law school enough for all of their help over the last three years," she said.
Menuz made headlines earlier this year when she secured a clerkship with the Supreme Court of Canada - the first time a UAlberta Law student has done so in seven years.
There will be little time for Menuz to rest following Convocation celebrations. Before beginning the prestigious clerkship, Menuz will complete her articles at the Alberta Court of Appeal and spend approximately five months at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP.
Throughout law school, Menuz was heavily involved in a number of activities outside the classroom, including competing on the Faculty's women's rugby team. Additionally, in 2016, she was a member of the UAlberta team that placed third in the Davies' Annual Corporate/Securities Law Moot, and earlier this year, competed in the 25th annual Wilson Moot.
Prior to joining UAlberta Law in 2014, Menuz attended Queen's University, where she earned a bachelor of commerce degree. During her completion of the program, Menuz went on exchange to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
It seems clear that from the start, Ashton was destined to make waves in Alberta and beyond.
