Updates on Winter Term 2022

Find out the latest information about UAlberta's safe start.

Communications - 14 January 2022

On January 14, President Flanagan provided an update on the U of A’s Winter 2022 start safe plan. Read the full announcement here.

Dean Billingsley previously provided this update in December, following the announcement that the university would stay remote until January 23:

Hello Everyone

Many of you will have seen this morning’s message from University of Alberta President Bill Flanagan informing the university community that, due to the risks and uncertainties posed by the COVID-19 Omicron variant, winter term classes will be delivered on-line from January 4 until at least January 23.

Pursuant to this directive, all in-person winter term classes at the Faculty of Law will be temporarily delivered on-line until at least January 23, 2022. The hope and intention is for these classes to thereafter return to in person delivery, but, as always, this is subject to public health considerations. The university has committed to providing an update on the return to in-person activities by January 18.

Please note that classes previously scheduled for on-line delivery in the winter term are not affected by the new directive and will be delivered on-line for the duration of the winter term.

Instructors are reminded that on-line teaching resources (including information on how to create Zoom and Googlemeet links for class delivery and recording) can be found on the Faculty of Law website, here. Even in the on-line environment, we continue to encourage instructors to record or to otherwise make lecture materials available to students who may not be able to attend class due to COVID-related considerations.

Instructors are also asked to advise students as soon as possible how to access their on-line classes during this temporary shift to online teaching and learning (i.e. what on-line platform will be used, where to find the virtual link for classes, etc.).

In addition, please note that, until at least January 23, 2022:

  • all student and/or faculty events, meetings and gatherings (including moots) must move on-line;
  • the Law library will be closed;
  • Law Centre access will be restricted to those with ONEcard access;
  • Physical distancing and masking is required in the Law Centre.

Please read the President’s message for further information about campus services and activities.

Thank you all for your continued understanding and resilience amid the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic. Undoubtedly, we are all tired of the constant change and the need to adapt our program and activities in response to COVID concerns. These are difficult times, but I am confident that, working together, we will get through to better days.

Wishing you all a safe, healthy and restful holiday break,

Barbara Billingsley
