Canadian Business Leader Award

CBLA recipients are individuals who have demonstrated leadership, business acumen and success, an entrepreneurial spirit, integrity, and a commitment to the community. The selection committee comprises members of the School's Business Advisory Council (BAC), as well as students, faculty and alumni.

To recognize Don Wheaton, President and CEO of the Wheaton Group of Companies, as the 2020 CBLA recipient, we sat down with him to gain insight into his views on entrepreneurship, family business and how the pandemic impacted how he approaches leadership and running his businesses.

Our CBLA recipient for 2020 is Don Wheaton, President & CEO of the Wheaton Group of Companies - a family business that was originally established by his father in the late 1940s.

Our CBLA recipient for 2020 is Don Wheaton, President & CEO of the Wheaton Group of Companies - a family business that was originally established by his father in the late 1940s.


A second-generation entrepreneur, Don began his career with the family business in 1975 after graduating from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Best known as the name behind one of the largest automotive retailers in Canada with dealerships from Victoria to Regina, the Wheaton family business interests have since diversified across Canada into real estate, insurance, aviation and banking.

For 39 years, the Canadian Business Leadership Award dinner has been a signature event for the University of Alberta School of Business and the Edmonton business community. Join us as we gather to celebrate a distinguished leader who embodies entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrates integrity, business success and commitment to the community.

    Individual ticket - $250

    Table of 8 - $2000

    Note: 1 or 2 students will be placed at each table to create tables of 10.

  • Schedule of Events

    5:30 PM - Doors open and welcome reception
    6 PM - Program begins and includes a three-course dinner, award presentation, and fireside chat with Don Wheaton and Dean Doucet
    9 PM - Event concludes
