Maria Vera

Bachelor of Education, Secondary Education (Japanese major, Spanish minor), 4th year

Course: CSL 100 (Winter 2023) with Instructor Jay Friesen

Who was your community partner and can you describe the project objectives

For CSL 100, I partnered with ABC Head Start Society. The project objectives were to develop cultural awareness and to educate Albertans on racism felt by marginalized groups.

What was your biggest takeaway from your CSL placement

That as someone who is going to be a second languages teacher, I need to know about programs that can help students retain their multilingualism and flourish.

How can you apply any newly gained knowledge/skills to your future endeavours (courses/employment/volunteering)?

I have learned how to apply my passion of languages into becoming a better future teacher and how to better teach the next generation of multilingual learners. I have learned about myself in the process and how I navigated a monolingual, Eurocentric Canadian world in the process as someone who is multilingual themself.
