Opportunity to Serve: Two (2) Graduate Student Positions

The GSA Nominating Committee (GSA NoC) invites graduate students to submit nominations to fill the two (2) available positions for GSA Councillors-at-Large. GSA Bylaw and Policy provides that following the General Election, GSA Council fills any remaining positions from nominations forwarded by the GSA NoC (Section I: Elections, GSA Policy, Elections, Section I.POL.16.3). The term for this position begins immediately and ends April 30, 2019.

Nominations received will be circulated as submitted via email to the GSA Council.


Duties and Responsibilities

GSA Councillors-at-Large represent the interests of the graduate student population (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section C: GSA Council, GSA Bylaw, GSA Council, Section C.BYL.2.3.a.i) and are expected to attend the once-monthly meetings of GSA Council. As per GSA Bylaw and Policy, "if a CAL cannot attend a meeting, they will provide an advance written reason to the Speaker. If a CAL misses two (2) consecutive GSA Council meetings or a total of three (3) GSA Council meetings during their term, without an advance written reason acceptable to the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker," actions may be taken (GSA Bylaw and Policy, Section C: GSA Council, GSA Policy, GSA Council Attendance, Section C.POL5.4.a).

GSA Council

GSA Council is the highest governing body of the GSA and is comprised of the GSA President and Vice-Presidents, other elected officials of the GSA, one representative for each unit with a graduate program, and ten (10) Councillors-at-Large. As noted in GSA Bylaw and Policy, "the mandate of the GSA Council is to fulfill all responsibilities listed in Section 95 of the Post-Secondary Learning Act" (Section C: GSA Council, GSA Bylaw, GSA Council, Section C.BYL.1.1). Key issues such as the GSA Health and Dental Plan, the GSA Board Strategic Work Plan, and graduate studies and funding are regularly discussed at GSA Council. GSA Council Meeting Times
GSA Council meetings take place monthly on Monday at 6PM in 2-100 University Hall (Van Vliet Complex). A light dinner is served prior to each meeting. The GSA Council meetings scheduled for 2018-2019 can be found

Election Process
GSA Council will elect the remaining Councillor-at-Large position during the 19 November 2018 GSA Council meeting and nominees will be invited to deliver brief remarks to GSA Council prior to the casting of ballots. If nominees are unable to attend and would like to address GSA Council, alternate arrangements can be made.
