This summer Dr. Damji hosted a Heritage Youth Researcher Summer Program(HYRS) summer student, Korey Kobylka. The HYRS is an intensive, six-week summer science program for high school students in Alberta. HYRS offers Alberta students who have completed grade 11 the opportunity to do hands-on scientific research in University research facilities.

Korey is an ultimate frisbee playing high school student who is interested in finding out more about a career in the medical field. Dr. Damji supervised Korey on a project entitled "Costing for Cataract Surgery". Korey completed an extensive literature review on the cost of various consumable materials used in cataract surgery. With the mentorship of Dr. Simrenjeet Sandhu, Korey was able to contribute to a manuscript that is in preparation as well as produce a poster for presentation entitled "Lowering Costs in Cataract Surgeries Through the Standardization of Product Use: a Literature Review".

Korey was also able to learn from the fertile research environment within the Department and help to generate a story on Dr. Carlos Solarte's Global projects that is featured on the Deparment's website.
