Research Program

Design and Performance Evaluation of Road Base Courses Comprised of Asphaltenes Derived from Alberta Oil Sands

This research is focused on using asphaltenes derived from Alberta oil sands in high quality road base course construction. The performance of two different types of road base course asphalt mixes is being studied: 1) high-modulus base course comprising asphaltene-enriched binder; and 2) granular road base materials stabilized using asphaltene and bitumen emulsions. 

Asphalt Concrete Modification to Improve Flexible Pavement Performance in Cold Regions

This research involves conducting laboratory investigations to understand the effects of adding various asphalt modifiers, including nanomaterials and fibers, on the properties of asphalt mixes at different temperatures and environmental conditions.
