Dr. Michael T. Hendry, P.Eng., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, the NSERC Associate Industrial Research Chair in Railway Engineering, and the Associate Director of the Canadian Rail Research Laboratory at the University of Alberta. Over the past 12 years, Dr. Hendry has been a leader in advancing technical and methodological solutions to enhance the railway industry’s management of the risk associated with ground hazards across North America and has initiated interdisciplinary research combining the engineering application of risk assessment with the impact on people and communities. In 2017, Dr. Hendry was recognized as one of the nation’s emerging geotechnical researchers/scholars through being awarded the Canadian Geotechnical Society’s Colloquium. In the same year, he was recognized by UNESCO as the leader of a “World Centre of Excellence on Landslide Disaster Reduction”. It is worth noting that this joint collaboration between the University of Alberta and the Geological Survey of Canada is the only entity within North and South America with this prestigious recognition, which is in effect from 2017 to 2020.
