(Edmonton) It's the first week of school and the Engineering Students' Society is hosting the second annual Engineering Carnival to familiarize new students with the many engineering clubs and projects they can join, and to remind senior students about the variety of activities engineering students can take part in.
"It's not really about joining a club, it's about getting to know people and exploring things you're interested in," said ESS president Sarah Elder, who is in her fifth year of electrical engineering studies.
Elder says taking part in extra-curricular groups gives students a bigger view of the Faculty of Engineering and a better understanding of what engineering is about.
"These groups help create our community-they give you a chance to do something outside of classes. When you find a group that's right for you, you discover that you've become part of something important," said Elder, adding that she "struggled" during her first two years of engineering.
By getting more involved in student life, she began to see a bigger picture of school and her career. "Engineering is not about continuous calculations. We're all part of something so much bigger. Joining the ESS is a big part of the engineer that I am going to become."
Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the Engineering Quad.
Student clubs and projects will be on hand both days. On Thursday, the carnival kicks off with a game of Quidditch (starting time: 10 a.m.). Other activities Thursday include a dunk tank, bumper ball, and a bungee run. On Friday, there will be sumo wresting, inflatable basketball, and bungee run.
