Haseeb Arshad

2023-2024 Term

Haseeb is a 2nd-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with a Master's degree from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) where he worked on AI-powered intelligent variable speed drives. Later, he worked as a research assistant at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in late 2021 and moved to Canada in early 2022 to pursue his Ph.D. with a focus on machine learning-based robust control of power converters. Additionally, he is working on anomaly detection for industrial processes using novel learning architectures and analyzing the toxicity of contextual data scraped from the Nextdoor app using transformer-based sequential models.

Haseeb honed his skills in organizing events and worked with student bodies during his master's degree. His passion for leadership and organizational skills were evident in his work as a member of the Pakistan Students' Association of Hong Kong Polytechnic University during his stint as a research assistant in 2021. Over the last year, he has volunteered for different organizations and has had the opportunity to work closely with international students in his personal capacity. As a student who has experienced stigma and discrimination, he understands the significance of fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment for all students. With his commitment to inclusivity, he is eager to give every student a voice, with the goal of ensuring that their concerns and suggestions are considered. This is Haseeb’s first term as Vice-President of Student Services with the GSA.
