International Nurse Registration
Improving the Process of Internationally Educated Nurses' Applications for Registration - Qualitative Study of Applicant Decision Making
Start/End Dates: 2015 - 2016
Investigators: Cummings GG (PI)
Funder: College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
Grant Amount: $49,750
Description: This qualitative study seeks to understand the rationale behind, and contributing factors in, making the choice between two registration processes with CARNA. Formerly, the majority of applicants were required to complete a Substantially Equivalent Competency (SEC) Assessment. Beginning in September 2013, CARNA offered applicants the option to proceed directly to a Bridge to Canadian Nursing (BCN) program (10 courses) without completing an SEC Assessment. This study examines how internationally educated nurses decide whether to undergo a Substantially Equivalent Competency Assessment or proceed directly to the Bridge to Canadian Nursing program.
