Dr. Russell is the Head of the Volcanology and Petrology Lab, and co-director of the Centre for Experimental Studies of the Lithosphere. His recent work has focused on the Slave cratonic mantle (geotherm modelling) and the volcanology and petrology of Canadian kimberlite bodies (kimberlite ascent). Dr. Russell's kimberlite research programs have also been closely allied to the needs of the Canadian diamond mining industry, with a long-running major research partnership with Rio Tinto's Diavik Mine, NWT.

Dr. Russell's research interests include volcanology and igneous petrology as related to the formation, transport and eruption of magma.
