Social justice informs much of what we do in the social sciences, humanities and fine arts, so how can the information collected about us, known as BIG DATA, be used to create a more open, diverse, inclusive and ethical society? Join the Faculty of Arts on Friday, September 20th for - "From Big Data to Social Justice: how data-driven inquiry politics can lead to openness in a closed-off world - with writer, thinker, speaker and stirrer Deb Verhoeven. In 2018, the Faculty of Arts welcomed Deb Verhoeven to campus as its newest Canada 150 Research Chair - the 25th appointment across Canada and the first at the University of Alberta. Described as Australia's most innovative academic, Verhoeven is a leading scholar in screen media and the emerging field of gender and cultural informatics - a field that combines digital technology, big data, and social justice.
