For the U of A's chemistry department, it's almost an embarrassment of riches. In 2012 alone, eight researchers and teachers won major awards for excellence in teaching and research. This incredible run includes one national award, three U of A awards, and four Faculty of Science awards.

3M National Teaching Fellowship
Professor Charles 'Chuck' Lucy set the bar high by being named a 3M National Teaching Fellow in February this year. Only up to 10 fellowships are awarded annually, and celebrate those who embody the ideals of teaching excellence.

University of Alberta Teaching Awards
The department stole the show when the U of A announced teaching award recipients earlier this month, taking home more awards than any other faculty or department. Professors Todd Lowary and Jonathan Veinot were honoured with the Rutherford Award Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Professor and Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching respectively while professor Eric Rivard won a University of Alberta Teaching Award.

Faculty of Science Excellence in Teaching and Research
At the annual Faculty of Science Celebration of Excellence in Teaching and Research gala, Chemistry again dominated the spotlight winning four out of a possible five awards. Professor Alex Brown took the top Faculty award for excellence teaching while professor Robert Campbell won for excellence in research. Dr. Jason Cooke won the Faculty of Science Innovation in Teaching Award, recognizing his commitment to creation of an improved teaching and learning environment. Dr. Yoram Apelblat (not pictured) was awarded the Kathleen W. Klawe Prize for Excellence in Teaching of Large Classes for his exceptional results in large lecture-based classes.
