These awards require student applications.
The John Orrell Memorial Prize in Shakespeare Studies
Value: Variable, not to exceed $1,000 in total.
This prize is normally awarded each year, with preference given to graduate students in the Department of English and Film Studies, for the purpose of travel related to the advancement of theatre history. Application in the form of a short research travel proposal should be made to the Chair, Department of English and Film Studies, Humanities Centre 3-13. The deadline for applications is April 30.
The James Patrick Follinsbee Memorial Scholarship in Creative Writing
Value: max allocation of $1,500 in total
Number: One or two in the Field of English
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student (or students) with demonstrated ability in creative writing who will be entering the fourth year of the Honors English Program or any year of a Graduate Program in English at the University of Alberta. This award is open to both full-time and part-time students, but not to previous winners of this award. There is no application form. Application by letter to the Chair of the Department and include samples of their creative work (manuscripts to be typed and double-spaced); a list of publications, if any; and a brief indication of future writing plans. The application deadline is April 30.

University Research Travel and Conference Awards
FGSR has Graduate Travel Awards.
The Graduate Student Association (GSA) has awards and bursaries, including for research travel.
Sarah Nettie Christie Travel Fund
The Sarah Nettie Christie Fund is an endowment given to the Department of English in 1988 by former English student Norma Bell Christie in memory of her mother. Part of the Christie Fund is dedicated to supporting conference and research travel for PhD students.
Students can apply twice for each category if they are in good standing and are not on a program extension. Amounts are:
§ $2,000: research travel excluding conferences
§ $1,500: conference travel
Deadlines are ideally September 15, January 15, and April 15. For information, contact the Graduate Program Administrator or the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies.
FGSR and External Awards and Funding
At the University of Alberta, PhD students received a guarantee of funding for four years, and MA students (course-based or thesis-based) receive one guaranteed year of funding. To secure additional funding, students can apply for external funds such as SSHRC while they are in-program. The Graduate Program provides workshops and other supports to help students win external funding. See the Financial Support website page for details.
FGSR Scholarships and Awards
$5,000-$35,000 annually. Includes Killam, Andrew Stewart and Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES) Awards.

External Awards
· SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council)
$20,000 (Doctoral) annually for 1-4 years.
$35,000 (Canada Graduate Scholarship) annually for 3 years.
Restricted to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Deadline: Mid-October
· Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
$50,000 annually for 3 years.
No citizenship or residency requirements.
Applicants nominated by the university who are unsuccessful in the national competition will receive The President's International Doctoral Award valued at $25,000 annually for 3 years.
Deadline: Early September
· Canada Graduate Scholarships - Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements
Up to $6,000
Applicants must have accepted or hold either a SSHRC Canada Graduate Scholarship or Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
The supplement covers costs associated with travel, living and other expenses (such as accommodation, meals, tuition, insurance and other necessary, non-research-related costs) during the research study period abroad.
Deadline: Late-September.

· Trudeau Scholarships
$60,000 annually for up to four years (including $20,000 for travel)
Each year the University nominates up to eight graduate students

· FQRSC (Fonds de recherche société et culture)
$20,000 annually for up to 3 years. Students who maintain residency requirements in the Province of Quebec are eligible for these graduate awards at the MA and PhD level.
