Black History Month Panel Discussion: Black Women in STEM

In celebration of Black History Month, WiSER is excited to host a virtual panel discussion showcasing the contributions, achievements, and lived experiences of a diverse group of black women in STEM. This event is sponsored by Edmonton Unlimited.

We invite you to join in and listen to our panel discussion! In addition to hearing from our panelists, we will also be engaging in a short Q&A period at the end!

About the panelists

Dr. Bukola Salami is the director of Intersections of Gender Signature Area at the Office of Vice President Research and a Professor at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. Her research program focuses on policies and practices shaping migrants health as well as Black peoples health. She founded and leads an African Child and Youth Migration Network, a network of 42 scholars from 4 continent. In 2020, she founded the Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program at the University of Alberta. She is a member of the Public Health Agency of Canada Working Group on the Mental Health of Black Canadian, advisory committee on Bell Lets Talk Funding, Board member of Black Opportunities Fund, Board member of the Canadian Nurses Association, advisory board member of the CIHR Institute for Human Development, Child and Youth Health, Editor for the Canadian Journal of Nursing Research, Associate Editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) and on the Editorial Board of Nursing Inquiry and Qualitative Health Research Journal.

Heather Campbell has had a diverse, three decades long energy career in a full range of energy industries. She is the Executive Director, Clean Technology with Alberta Innovates. Ms. Campbell holds a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree in Biochemical and Chemical Engineering from Western University in addition to a Master of Laws in Energy Law and Policy from the University of Dundee. She is a licensed professional engineer practicing in Alberta, Canada. Ms. Campbell is an engaged, lifelong community volunteer, actively sharing her talents, resources and time by participating and often leading a purposely diverse range of organizations. Ms. Campbell is a board director with Calgary’s performing arts centre Arts Commons, is a member of the Advisory Council for Western Engineering, and is a Commissioner with the Calgary Police Commission. Ms. Campbell performs two clean technology advisory roles: an advisory council member of the B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy and an advisory board member of the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program. She is the former co-chair of Alberta’s Anti-Racism Advisory Council and has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Dr. Linda Gorim is an Assistant Professor and Western Grains Research Foundation Chair in Cropping Systems at the University of Alberta. Her research interest lies in the development of novel cropping systems that are resource efficient, profitable and sustainable in the long term. She is also interested in the training and experiential exposure of agronomy students so they are equipped to handle the plethora of challenges currently and in the future, will be faced by crop producers. Her career began when she was awarded a scholarship to do a master’s degree in Agriculture, Food security and Natural Resource Management at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart Germany by the Stiftung Fiat Panis, Ulm Germany. Her background growing up in challenging conditions in West Africa and education in the West is the driving force behind her research work geared at impacting lives.
