Endowment Fund for Northern Studies and Research 

Purpose: Awarded annually, the purpose of the award is to assist senior undergraduate students with satisfactory academic standing attending the U of A and entered in a degree program involving northern studies and research or study leading to a northern specialization. This scholarship is endowed by the International Winter Cities Committee (Edmonton Branch).

Eligibility
The Endowment Fund for Northern Studies and Research is open to senior undergraduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing northern studies and/or research. The award ($1,000) will provide financial support toward the cost of tuition, travel, or costs associated with research. Students in a degree program involving northern studies and research leading to a northern specialization. See map (https://arcg.is/1KL5ra).
Application Procedure
  • Completed Google application form
  • Copy of your transcripts over the last two years. Please have it forwarded directly from the Registrar's Office to UAlberta North, 11011-88 Avenue
  • One letter in support of your application from a faculty member of the University of Alberta who knows about your interests and goals. Please have the letter emailed to northres@ualberta.ca with the subject line "student last name - Northern Endowment". The letter of support must not exceed ONE page.

Kennett Y. Spencer Memorial Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship is endowed through the will of the late Kennett Y Spencer.

This Scholarship is administered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research

Eligibility
The Scholarship is open to residents of northern Alberta (as defined by the Northern Alberta Development Council), Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. Awarded annually to a student registered full-time or part-time in a graduate degree program at the University of Alberta whose focus of enquiry is in the field of northern studies. Application Procedures

Your application should include the following:

  • One copy of the completed application form (see below)
  • A transcript emailed to northres@ualberta.ca
  • Evidence of original research (e.g., course paper, thesis, research paper), and reference letters (minimum of 3) must be received no later than  November 1st

Nomination Procedures
The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic achievement (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale). 
Adjudication Procedures
The award is granted to a student at the University of Alberta for high academic attainment and original research carried out in any discipline pertaining to northern studies. UAlberta North will review the letters of application and forward the name of one nominee to the Graduate Scholarship Committee for final approval.

Ashley and Janet Cameron Graduate Scholarship in Northern Studies and Research

Purpose: This scholarship is endowed by the estate of Ashley and Janet Cameron. The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding student in a graduate degree program at the University of Alberta whose focus of enquiry is in the field of northern and circumpolar studies.

Eligibility
The Ashley and Janet Cameron Graduate Scholarship in Northern Studies and Research ($3,000)* is awarded annually to an outstanding student in a graduate degree program at the University of Alberta whose focus of enquiry is in the field of northern and circumpolar (considered to include that part of Canada which lies north of the southern limit of the discontinuous permafrost zone; and the other seven Arctic countries) studies. The recipient will be selected on the basis of superior academic achievement (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale)
Application and Renewal Procedures

Your application should include the following:

Completed application form, which asks for a description of the research to be undertaken (maximum of 2 pages)

  • A transcript over the last two years emailed to northres@ualberta.ca
  • Reference letters (minimum of 3) must be received no later than November 1st.

 The supervisor's report must be received no later than November 1st and can be sent to northres@ualberta.ca.

Ashley and Janet Cameron Northern Studies Undergraduate Scholarship

Eligibility
The scholarship is awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of study for any undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta.
