For Host Supervisors

The aim of the UTokyo Spring GX is to provide opportunities for doctoral students from University of Tokyo, demonstrating excellent academic performance, to conduct research as part of the doctoral thesis (including research internships). This research should have strategic value for the partnership between University of Alberta and University of Tokyo.

Host Supervisor Responsibilities

In order to facilitate the doctoral research candidate’s application to UTokyo for funding, UAlberta host supervisors are requested to provide a letter confirming willingness to host the candidate that references the research project as well as details on the expected outcome and/or prospective cooperation in the future. A template may be provided upon request.

Once the participant has arrived on campus, host supervisors are asked to provide access to appropriate research facilities and to act as a mentor for the duration of the participant’s stay.

Responsibilities of the University of Alberta International (UAI)

The University of Alberta International is responsible for overseeing this program and will guide and directly assist the host professor and the University of Tokyo doctoral candidate through the invitation and immigration application process.

UAI will submit the Foreign Visitor Category Assessment for any research interns as necessary.

Candidates will normally be formally invited to the University of Alberta, and must obtain the proper immigration documents to work (not study) in Canada. This is dependent on a few factors, the primary one being the length of stay as a researcher.

Stays of less than 120 calendar days:

Stays of more than 120 calendar days:

The appropriate category for invitation will be determined and confirmed with all parties after nomination/application on an ad-hoc basis, as it can depend on individual factors as well.

Candidate's research may commence at times of year acceptable to the program, depending on the availability of both parties during that period, funding, etc.

UAlberta faculty are welcome to contact the International Internship Coordinator (Inbound) at intern@ualberta.ca with any questions or for more information.
