Governor General's Gold Medal

The Governor General's Gold Medal is awarded for academic excellence at the graduate level. At the University of Alberta, the award recognizes the doctoral graduate who achieves the highest academic standing.

Value

Each recipient is awarded a Gold Medal. One medal is presented at the Spring Convocation and two medals are presented at the Fall Convocation.

Important Update: Academic Gold Medal Delivery
Academic Medal Delivery Work is progressing to create an updated Governor General’s Academic Medal for Canada’s first Indigenous governor general, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon.

We anticipate that medals for both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years will be shipped to participating schools in fall 2022.

Eligibility
While selection of the winner is primarily based on academic excellence, attention to the dissertation and cumulative scholarly achievement during the doctoral program will also be considered.
Application Procedures
There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by their home department and nominated to Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) for final selection.

Submissions must be uploaded through GSMS. For instructions on how to submit nominations through the GSMS system, please review the instructions in the Department Resources under Award Resources on our website.

Adjudication Procedures
The FGSR Graduate Scholarship Committee adjudicates the competition and FGSR notifies the winner(s) accordingly.
Deadline
Deadline for Departments to submit one nomination via GSMS awards portal for 2022 Fall Convocation is Tuesday, October 11, 2022.
