Alan D. Fielding ('65 BA, '69 LLB, '72 LLM) exemplifies the spirit of the Alumni Honour Award, which recognizes the significant contributions made over a number of years by University of Alberta alumni in the community and beyond.
Fielding is both a leader and innovator in his field, and was active in his law practice until his retirement in 2005. He has always been, and remains a dedicated volunteer, serving his community in a variety of capacities, locally and internationally.
Fielding & Co. LLP law office opened its doors on August 1, 1973 in Camrose, Alberta. Serving as a general practice attorney, Fielding contributed to the legal profession in Alberta as Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta, board member of the Alberta Law Reform Institute, chairman of the Ponoka Mental Health Review Panel, member of the Surrogate Rules Committee, and president of the Legal Education Society of Alberta. Upon his retirement, the firm elected to rename the practice Fielding & Co (from Fielding Syed Smith & Throndson) in tribute to his "exemplary service to the legal profession and to the Camrose community."
In 2014, Fielding was honoured with a Governor General's Caring Canadian Award for his significant and sustained engagement with local and international causes. A long time Rotarian, Fielding lives by the Rotary motto - Service above Self - and for nearly 50 years has been true to his values. He has given his time and support to organizations such as the Battle River Credit Union, the Battle River Community Foundation and the Camrose Daybreak Rotary Club. He has been president of the Sahakarini Inter-World Education and Development Association (a charity that raises funds and oversees projects in developing countries), president of the CCH Music Parents Association, president of Kidney Foundation- Camrose Branch, president of Red Cross- Camrose Branch, president of the Camrose Concert Series, and Stewardship Committee Chair of Bethel Lutheran Church.
In addition to serving his community, Fielding is a lifelong learner, taking classes and attending guest lectures at Augustana. Through all these activities, professional and otherwise, Fielding has been a passionate supporter of the arts, as both a performer and as a champion of the Camrose and Edmonton music scenes.
