• 2. Bios

  Originally from Newfoundland, Daryl Priceis in his third year as the conductor of the University of Alberta Concert Band. Since his move to Edmonton in 2001, Daryl has been teaching high school concert band, choir, and musical theatre in St. Albert Public Schools and has conducted many community ensembles in and around the Edmonton area. Daryl is also busy as a clinician for many school band and choral programs and has been working with Edmonton area pit orchestras for musical theatre productions.

   

  Mr. Price completed the undergraduate degrees in Music and Music Education k-12 at Memorial University of Newfoundland, with a principal study in Trumpet. Under the direction of Dr. Donald Buell and Dr. Douglas Dunsmore, Daryl found a passion for music education, conducting and musical leadership. In 2011, he completed the graduate degree program under the supervision or Dr. Tom Dust at the University of Alberta with a Master's in Education, focused on secondary music choral education.

   

  As a multi-faceted instrumentalist and vocalist, Daryl has performed with many ensembles. Three years were spent as a baritone with the Greenwood Singers under the direction of Dr. Robert DeFreece. As an instrumentalist he has performed with the University of Alberta Symphonic Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Angela Schroeder as a horn player, a bass clarinettist, and for the past seven years, as a bassoonist. He has also performed as a bassoonist with the University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra and spent three years as a trumpet player with the Concordia University Orchestra. Daryl has committed much of his time to the musical theatre community as well, playing saxophone, flute, and trombone. He is currently the Inclusive Education Coordinator for a high school within St. Albert Public Schools, and teaches Math and Science.

  
  
  

  Dr. Angela Schroeder is currently Professor of Music in the Department of Music at the University of Alberta. She is the Director of Bands, the Area Coordinator for Winds and Percussion, and conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Summer Band. She teaches courses in conducting and music education, and works with Graduate students in instrumental conducting. In 2017 Angela received the Faculty of Arts Undergraduate Teaching award, and was subsequently awarded the 2018 Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching by the University of Alberta. She previously taught conducting at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. Angela is the conductor of the St. Albert Community Band, an ensemble that is currently in their 49th concert season. She lead the ensemble on their first overseas tour in July 2015, performing in Austria and Germany, and will continue to conduct them into their 50th season in 2020.

  
  

  Dr. Schroeder completed undergraduate degrees in Music and Education at the University of Calgary, majoring in Secondary Music Education, with performance studies in piano and trumpet. She also completed the Diploma of Fine Arts in Wind Band Conducting under the supervision of Glenn Price. After a teaching career at various secondary schools in the Calgary area, she entered the Long Term Residency program at The Banff Centre, where she studied and performed on piano, trumpet and as a conductor. Angela entered the Master's program in Wind Conducting at Northwestern University in 2002, where she studied with Mallory Thompson and earned the Master of Music in Conducting. In 2007, she completed the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Band Conducting at the University of North Texas, under the supervision of Eugene Corporon.

  
  

  Angela Schroeder is well known in the Alberta music education community, not only through her teaching and conductin both in schools and in community music organizations, but through her involvement as an executive director of the Alberta Band Association for several years. Angela has performed on cornet with the Mill Creek Colliery Band and was the Principal Trumpet for the Concordia University Orchestra for seven seasons. Angela has guest conducted and adjudicated numerous wind bands in festivals and clinics throughout Canada, the United States, Austria, Germany, Australia and Thailand. She is a contributor in eleven volumes of the Teaching Music through Performance in Band series, which profile wind literature for all levels of instrumental instruction, published by GIA. She is joyfully married to husband Geoffrey and mother to her brilliant sons, Joshua and Jonah.

   

   

  Ben Whittier, originally from Denver, Colorado, is pursuing a Doctorate of Music Degree from the University of Alberta, studying with Dr. William H. Street. Before moving to Alberta, Mr. Whittier studied with Dr. Andrew Dahlke and Professor David Henderson at the University of Northern Colorado and the University of the Pacific, respectively. Later this year, he will be giving a recital of various chamber music works at the University of Alberta.
