Quatuor International de Saxophones (QIS) brings together four musicians from three continents, united by their dedication to the art of chamber music. First formed in 2002 for performances at the World Saxophone Congress in Minneapolis, the quartet represents the synergy of different personalities, musical aesthetics, and cultural experiences, all supported by an enduring friendship. The QIS has performed in Belgium, Canada, China, Croatia, France, Japan, Scotland, Slovenia, Thailand, and the USA. They have commissioned new works by composers Roger Boutry, Frédéric Devreese, Sylvain Kassap, Jean Baptiste Devilliers, Carlton Macy, François Rossé, Andriy Talpash, Kushida Testurosuke, and Chen Yi. Each year the four saxophonists meet in different parts of the world to perform together and explore contemporary music from composers of diverse cultures and national backgrounds. This recording/concert project additionally calls upon the artistry  of pianist Viktoria Reishwich-Dapp and saxophonist Allison Balcetis.

Allison Balcetis, internationally recognized as an ambitious contemporary saxophonist, has studied and collaborated with artists from around the world.  Her international performance career includes concerts throughout North America, Europe, Brazil, Thailand, and Taiwan. Her work as a soloist and chamber musician has produced over 100 world premieres. Allison's current chamber ensembles include performing with mixed instrument quartet UltraViolet, the Edmonton Saxophone Quartet, Proteus Quartet, free improvisation ensemble damn magpies, and work with modern dancers in Edmonton.  She is a major proponent of playing the music of our time, music by living composers, music that encompasses the sounds of our modern world. As a faculty member of the University of Alberta since 2009, Allison trains the next generation of thoughtful, artistic musicians, teaching saxophone, chamber music, woodwind techniques, and aural skills. Outside of the university, she served as President of New Music Edmonton from 2018-2020 and she was also the co-curator of SubArctic Improv, a monthly concert series pairing over 150 cross-disciplinary artists in a totally improvised context which ran from 2016-2018. In 2017 she was awarded the Qualico Artistic Leadership Award from the City of Edmonton.

Viktoria Reiswich-Dapp’s extraordinary artistry has been recognized with national and international prizes and enthusiastic praise. She has performed with orchestras and in various chamber music formations in Canada, the U.S., Austria, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Croatia, and Uzbekistan. Viktoria’s career is marked by an unusually wide range of accomplishments and a variety of musical traditions. She received her early training in the Soviet Union before studying at the University of Music in Karlsruhe (Germany) with Sontraud Speidel (a student of Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen) and at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts with Irina Edelstein (a student of Jacob Milstein) and Joachim Volkmann (a student of Wilhelm Kempff). In Canada she was the first and only performer to be awarded the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for her doctoral research with Jacques Després at the University of Alberta on intermedial performance strategies. She is a full-time lecturer at the UofA and frequently shares her experiences in lectures and masterclasses, and as an adjudicator in festivals. She contributes to the Edmonton music community as a board member of the Anne Burrows Music Foundation and as a faculty advisor for ARMTA’s collegiate chapter at the University of Alberta.
