It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Dorothy Gibson, longtime supporter of and contributor to Augustana Campus.

04 January 2021

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Dorothy Gibson, longtime supporter of and contributor to Augustana, wife of former Augustana professor Dr. Garry Gibson and namesake of the Dr. Garry & Dorothy Gibson Nordic Ski Library, which opened in 2019.

The Gibsons have dedicated over 40 years to the Augustana and Camrose communities, especially in terms of recreation and lifelong fitness. Alongside Garry’s work in developing Augustana’s outdoor education program, Dorothy supported Augustana’s athletics department, sports teams and students involved in the outdoor program in many ways. Dorothy, affectionately known as Doh, became a surrogate mother to hundreds of students over the years.

The Gibsons continued to give to Augustana through not only the Nordic Ski library but student awards, recreation and athletics, chaplaincy and more.

Dorothy passed away on December 23, at the age of 92 years. Due to Alberta Health restrictions, a private service was held. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held in the summer of 2021 for all family and friends once health restrictions have been lifted.

A photo of Dorothy Gibson with husband Garry Gibson. The family has also asked that if family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Dorothy’s memory may be made in lieu of flowers to the Dr. W Garry (Gibber) and Dorothy Gibson Award for Excellence in Nordic Sports Scholarship at Augustana. Should you wish to make a gift electronically please visit Augustana’s giving website and direct your memorial gift to the Dr. W Garry (Gibber) and Dorothy Gibson Award for Excellence in Nordic Sports under the "other" option.
