Alternate Formats

Conversion of print materials into alternate formats is required by students whose disabilities affect the processing of print materials, for example, blind or partially sighted students and students with certain learning disabilities.

Classroom and Lab Assistants

Some students with mobility disabilities or vision loss may use the services of a classroom or a lab assistant, to carry out the task expectations of the course. The assistant will act on the instructions and directions of the student and, in the case of students who are blind or partially sighted, will verbalize or describe the results to the student so that he or she can complete his or her lab report. The assistant does not 'do' the work for the student, but does carry out some of the tasks to facilitate the learning.

Students with disabilities may require accommodation support in clinical placements, internships, cooperative placements, teaching practicums, or other experiential learning courses.

Sign Language Interpreting Services

Interpreters turn English into sign language and vice versa, ensuring the communication circle is complete. The interpreter(s) sit or stand at the front of the classroom so students can view the interpreter, the professor, and other instructional aids/materials at the same time. Teaching staff will receive a package from SAS, before classes begin, letting you know whether a student in your course will be using these services, and information about how to work with these services.

Syllabus Notice

We would like to suggest that you include the following paragraph in your syllabi. It is designed to reinforce students' responsibilities regarding disability-related accommodations and services. The information in the brackets { } needs editing, for example, whether your course has a laboratory component, and whether that lab coordinator needs the forms indicated. Feel free to include additional information specific to your course.

Suggested syllabus paragraph

Students registered with Accessibility Resources (AR) who will be using accommodations in the classroom (or the lab), or who will be writing exams through AR, are required to provide a "Letter of Accommodation" to me (and a separate letter to the lab coordinator) as soon as possible. This letter is generated when you to activate your accommodations in Clockwork at the start of each semester. Those students who need accommodated exams must register their exams in Clockwork a minimum of one week before each exam. You are encouraged to make an appointment with me (and the lab coordinator) to discuss any required accommodations. If you require disability-related educational supports and you have not yet met with the AR Advisor, please contact Accessibility Resources at 2-06 Founders' Hall, 780-679-1649, or augsas@ualberta.ca.

For students who write exams with accommodations at AR, please be cognizant of their deadlines and regulations. If you fail to meet these deadlines or follow the procedures, the result is most likely that AR will be unable to provide the necessary space and/or services you require. In these situations, the department does not have the resources to provide accessibility-related exam accommodations, and you will be invited to write your exams with peers during the allotted time in the assigned room.
