Assistive Listening Devices

Assistive Listening Devices (ALD) refers to technology that helps a person with hearing loss or a voice, speech, or language disability to communicate. ALDs help to amplify the sounds that the user wants to hear and understand what is being said more clearly. They can be worn with a hearing aid or cochlear implant.

Braille Devices and Software

Braille technology devices provide blind or partially sighted people direct access to information often communicated in otherwise inaccessible formats. Devices available range from note takers to printers to tactile graphics producers.

Sign Language Interpreting Services

Interpreters at the University of Alberta have the training and ability to match the needs of students, whether they prefer the interpretation to be in American Sign Language or a contact variety sign language. Interpreting services are not limited to the classroom only. Services can be arranged for practicums, work placements, or other campus activities and events, if sufficient notice is provided.

Voice Input Software

Voice recognition software allows the user to talk and have everything they say turned into text on a computer. This can be helpful for writing lab reports, assignments, and exams.

Text-to-Speech Software

Text-to-speech software converts text information into audio content. You can read the digital version of the textbook while the program also reads it aloud to you.
