Top-Up Awards

The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies may provide top up awards to recipients of eligible external scholarships. Details of each top-up award eligibility are listed below. Note that all top up awards are contingent upon the availability of funds. GPS will notify recipients with an official notice of award.

Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship

The Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship is a Top-Up award that may be given to students registered full-time in a graduate degree program who hold a Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's (CGS-M).

The value of the Fellowship will be determined on a year to year basis.

Students who hold a CGS-M will automatically be considered for the Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship. There is no application form.


President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction

The President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction (PDPD) is a Top-Up award that may be given to students registered full-time in a doctoral degree program at the University of Alberta who have won one of the eligible major doctoral-level scholarships listed below:

  • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS)
  • NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship - Doctoral (NSERC CGS-D)
  • NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS-D)
  • SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship - Doctoral (SSHRC CGS-D)
  • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship
  • CIHR Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship - Doctoral (CIHR CGS-D)*
  • Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship

*CIHR Industry-Partnered and Strategic Initiative Doctoral Research Awards are not eligible for the President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction.

The President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction's value will be determined on a yearly basis.

Recipients of eligible scholarships will be automatically considered for President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction. There is no application form.
