Top-Up Awards

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research provides top up awards to recipients of eligible external scholarships. These sources of funding are intended to offset the cost of tuition and fees for masters and doctoral students. Details of each including values and eligibility are listed below.

Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship

The Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship is a Top-Up award given to students registered full-time in a graduate degree program who hold a Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master’s (CGS-M).

  • Value
    The value of the Fellowship is the minimum equivalent of tuition and fees for an academic year of graduate study (9 credits in each of Fall and Winter terms and 6 credits in each of Spring and Summer terms). In 2018-19, the Fellowship is valued at $5,800.
  • Application Procedures

    Students who hold a CGS-M will automatically be awarded the Walter H Johns Graduate Fellowship when the CGS-M award is properly accepted and activated at UAlberta. The Fellowship will automatically be paid out in the first term that the CGS-M starts. Note that students are responsible for paying their tuition and fees.


President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction

The President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction (PDPD) is a Top-Up award given to students registered full-time in a doctoral degree program who have won one of the eligible major doctoral-level scholarships listed below under 'Eligibility'.

  • Value

    The President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction is valued at $10,000 (Year 1) and is valued at least equivalent to tuition and fees for a Canadian student for an academic year (9 credits in each of Fall and Winter terms and 6 credits in each of Spring and Summer terms) in subsequent years that the major doctoral award is held. In 2018-2019, Year 2, 3, and 4 PDPD's are valued at $5,800.

    A student may receive the President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction valued at $10,000 only once during their doctoral program and may hold only one President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction per year.

  • Eligibility

    Eligible Doctoral Awards are as follows:

    • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS)
    • NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship - Doctoral (NSERC CGS-D)
    • NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS-D)
    • SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship - Doctoral (SSHRC CGS-D)
    • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship
    • CIHR Frederick Banting and Charles Best canada Graduate Scholarship - Doctoral (CIHR CGS-D)*
    • Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship

    *CIHR Industry-Partnered, Priority Announcement and Strategic Initiative Doctoral Research Awards are not eligible for the President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction.

  • Application Procedures

    Recipients of eligible NSERC and SSHRC scholarships will be awarded the President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction upon receipt of the NSERC/SSHRC Payment Activation form or the NSERC/SSHRC Progress Report in the FGSR. There is no application form.

    Recipients of eligible CIHR awards and the Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship will be awarded the President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction after submitting a copy of their Notification of Award to the FGSR. The Notification of Award must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the start date of the eligible major award
