Healthy workplaces are the result of an environment that promotes and protects the healthy and well-being of its members. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that the workplace directly influences the physical, mental, economic and social well-being of workers and in turn the health of their families, communities and society. Further, the workplace offers an ideal setting to support the promotion of health of a large audience and encourage a culture of care, free of judgement.Through health promotion, community members are encouraged to strengthen their health literacy and take control of their own health and well-being. By extension, the overall well-being of the organization is improved.

Recognizing that healthy faculty and staff directly impact the student experience, the University of Alberta drafted the Healthy University Strategic Plan was designed to foster healthy working, learning and living environments for faculty, students and staff. The vision is Thriving People in a Caring Community.
